Solar incentives

Incentives for solar customers come from different resources. Sometimes the total amount of the incentives account for up to 55% of the system’s cost. However, incentives to go solar have been decreasing. For example PA Sunshine decreased the amount it refunds customers from $2.25 per watt installed to $1.25 in just a little bit more than one year.

Here is the list of some incentives:

State Incentives:

Pennsylvania Sunshine Solar Rebate Program
This program offers residential and commercial customers state level rebates for a solar energy system. The total amount of this program is 100 million dollars. This program is expected to last 3 to 4 years before it runs out of money. Currently the program offers $2.25 per installed dc watt for most residential customers and up to $1.75 per dc watt installed for small commercial customers. Also customers who decide to install a solar thermal system can benefit from this program by taking advantage of a rebate of up to ¼ of the system price.

Solar alternative energy credit (SAEC)
Under Pennsylvania law, a solar alternative energy credit (SAEC)* represents proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated by a qualifying PV facility. Electricity suppliers must purchase SAECs in order to meet their compliance obligations under the law, or pay a Solar Alternative Compliance Payment (SACP) for any shortfalls in SAEC purchases. In Pennsylvania, the SACP varies from year to year based largely on the market price of SAECs traded during the prior compliance year, thus it is only known after the end of a compliance year. The SACP is for a given year is calculated as 200% times the sum of (1) the market value of solar AECs for the reporting period and (2) the levelized value of up-front rebates received by sellers of SAECs (see PUC order listed above for a more detailed description). For the 2008-2009 compliance year the SACP was $550.15, the largest part of which is attributable to the weighted average SAEC market price of $260.19/SAEC for the period.

Federal Incentives:

Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit
Under this program, residential customers are eligible to receive tax credits of 30% of the installed solar system cost. Excess credit can be carried towards next tax year.

+ Bonus Depreciation (2008-2009)

Under the federal Modified Accelerated Cost-Recovery System (MACRS), businesses may recover investments in certain property through depreciation deductions.
